What Does an Interior Designer Do?

What do you do, exactly?

Let's chat about a question I get asked a lot: what is it, exactly, that you do? There’s a common misconception that all designers do is fluff pillows, play with fabrics, and spend other people’s money. There’s a lot more to our job than that. A LOT.

Interior designers are the architects of your indoor space. Just like architects, we create highly technical drawings of all things indoor: trim profiles, cabinets, tile layouts, ceiling details (beams), lighting placement, fireplace surrounds, etc.

We also select every single surface on the inside of your home. Have you ever thought about your cabinet drawer slides? Because we have — and we specify which ones your builder should use. We also choose all the plumbing, lighting, tile, countertops, and hardware, to name a few categories.

But, come on, you do fluff some pillows, don’t you?

Totally! Beyond our expertise in interior architecture, we are furniture gurus. We know what makes a sofa comfy and what size rug works for each space. We can mix pattern and color in a way that makes our clients go “I never would have put that together, but it totally works!” Not only that, we have developed a deep book of resources for high quality unique pieces. We know what companies stand behind their product and which fabric will repel even the toughest spill.

Here’s one more little secret — fluffing pillows is sweaty work. When we do an install, we aren’t showing up in heels. We are in workout clothes, on the floor positing cords under rugs, cutting rug pads, hanging art, and cleaning mirrors. Fluffing pillows is our exercise.
